Physical formats: A blu-ray of hope for slipped discs? | The Asian Age

  1. Since record labels noticed that revenues from digital income was not only pale in comparison to revenues generated from physical formats, mainly CDs, and that digital revenues will not offset those from “lost” physical sales.
  2. Vinyl records, which have been showing a year to year growth as a physical format since 2002, has provided one answer, but it has not even remotely been sufficient to match CD sales/revenues.
  3. In the US, new vinyl releases often have a larger profit margin than do releases on CD or digital downloads.
  4. Officially called Pure Audio, the technology uses similar encoding techniques to those of its predecessors but, crucially, has the support of all major record labels.
  5. Pioneered by the Universal Music Group
  6. 35 titles have already achieved sales of more than 500,000 units.
  7.  Albums in the Blu-Ray format will be accompanied by a digital version too!
